The Hot Rats Sessions box set celebrates the 50th anniversary of one of the greatest albums in the history of recorded music. The original 1969 Frank Zappa album was the first record to be recorded on a prototype 16-Track Tape Machine. Self-described as a "Movie For Your Ears," it was technically the second solo outing for the composer and the album that put FZ on the map as a guitar player. The recording sessions produced a wealth of material that ended up being sprinkled among several releases.
Incredible set and invaluable collection of the creation and editing of Zappa’s best album ever, « The Hot Rats Sessions » is a sheer delight. From the notes, to the meticulous arrangement of all the recording from all the Sessions, this 6 CD set will absolutely stun even the most hardcore Zappa fan with how good this music is. OK, as the guy says in the notes « careful, it’s a little jazzy » and indeed it is. But on the other hand, if the greatest American musical genius of all time, Duke Ellington, were listening to the almost 40 minutes... or is it an hour ?... of « Willie the Pimp » here, he might say « I think it’s a little bluesy. Indeed, it is that, too. This set also has music from other subsequent Zappa and Mothers albums... in fact it has the absolute BEST music from those albums. Let’s dispense with the simplistic approach to such complex and fabulous music. It is jazz in key spots « Peaches », « Umbrellas», « Gumbo » and « Camel » ... and it is blues on « Willie » and « Greenjeans » that can also be seen as psychedelic rock from 1969. But let me digress slightly by stating flat out that this collection is even better than the original « Hot Rats » album and let me explain why. My jazz playing friends and I see jazz as a spontaneous art form. See this set has the original unedited music before the overdubs. Ah, yes, overdubs! Jazz fanatics always say you can’t touch that solo! If there’s a reason to keep « Hot Rats » in 1969 out of the jazz bracket, it’s the overdubs. Well these sessions are the original playing of the songs... so original you can hear the thing BEFORE it’s even complete. So NOW it IS jazz. Seriously, this is soooo much better than the original album because the spontaneity is breathtaking. Zappa’s recorded exclamations as he listens and conducts and cajoles are fabulous! You can hear how proud he is of this music. The musicians are out of this world fabulons. Ian Underwood is beyond belief great! His piano and his sax are stupendous all the way through the 6 cd’s. Zappa himself is fabulous... and yes even a little jazzy on that rock guitar. Sugarcane Harris blows this whole set to pieces, pulverizing every musical genre and swinging all the way. The original Mother’s rhythm section is even here in a few tracks and Don Van Vliet is so powerful on the vocal to « Willie » that you have to wonder what could have been if only he could have stuck with Frank for more than « Bongo Fury » 5 years later. Among the standout pieces not on the « Hot Rats « album are thé piano version of « 20 small cigars » on « Chunga » and especially the opening disc one Eric Satie style solo piano music from « Burnt Weeny » . But there is much more that would appear on that album ... like the original fantastic « Little House » and on « Weasels ». As i am one of those Zappa fanatics I wrote about earlier, I can only thank the people who put this out, as the song says, directly from my heart to you.
